Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention, Session 02: 16 DEC 2022

December 16, 2022

Program Description

From 2006 to 2021, suicide was the second leading cause of death among military personnel, accounting for 24.8% of all deaths (Mann & Fischer, 2021). While targeted evidence-based suicide prevention interventions like Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (BCBT) exist, widespread implementation of the treatment into the military healthcare system (MHS) is limited. As a result, service members suffering with suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors have limited to no access to this therapy that has been demonstrated to reduce suicide attempts by 60% for up to two years post-treatment (Rudd et al., 2015). The BCBT-SP training aims to prepare providers with the knowledge and skills to implement protocol-adherent BCBT-SP with service members who have experienced recent suicidal ideation and/or a suicide attempt.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for Physicians, Social Workers and Psychologists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Use cognitive strategies and interventions to undermine suicidal beliefs that contribute to suicidal behaviors.
