Breakout Session 1: Trauma Triage in Disasters
In this session, we will delve into the crucial role of medical providers at the Point of Injury (POI) in LSCO scenarios. Through interactive discussions and case studies, attendees will learn about advanced triage techniques, rapid assessment, and effective communication strategies to ensure seamless continuity of care from the POI to higher echelons of medical support. Special emphasis will be placed on optimizing the use of limited resources and prioritizing interventions to maximize patient outcomes.

- Apply a systematic assessment in Trauma Triage – Cognitive 3.
- Describe the management of Mass Casualty Events in both Civilian and Terrorism scenarios.
- Summarize steps for initial triage and casualty care after triage.
- Perform a standardized assessment in arrhythmic formats.
- Compare and contrast Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Trauma Assessments.
- Perform a standardized assessment in arrhythmic formats.
- Discuss conditions in which a chest tube insertion should be conducted.
- Define landmarks for successful chest tube insertion.
- Describe types of ventilators.
- Identify immediate field considerations for a hemorrhaging patient.
- Describe the principles, advantages, and disadvantages of various drags and carries in various stages of casualty care.
- Describe the major characteristics of blood products.
- Describe adverse patient reactions to blood transfusion.
- Perform initial treatment of burns during Tactical Field Care.
- Identify the triage criteria in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Field Triage Decision Scheme within a mass casualty scenario with civilian school bus motor vehicle collision.
- State the four steps of the CDC’s Field Triage Decision Scheme within a mass casualty scenario with civilian school bus motor vehicle collision.
- Examine local protocols within a mass casualty scenario with civilian school bus motor vehicle collision.
- Practice triage of patients and perform continued assessments for reevaluation and interventions.
- Identify the importance of early application of limb tourniquets to control life-threatening bleeding.
- Triage patients and perform continued assessments for reevaluation and interventions.
- Demonstrate steps to insert a chest tube.
