Program Description

The Alabama Army National Guard Office of the State Surgeon is excited to present the ALARNG Medical Conference 2023, focusing on Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO), to be held in the picturesque Orange Beach, AL. This conference aims to provide medical providers with insights and strategies to enhance their ability to perform critical tasks and achieve Army Health Care standards in the challenging context of LSCO.

Target Audience

The Nursing Track, provides continuing education for nurses. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify key factors that determine burn wound type, assessment findings and treatment.
  2. Identify the proper technique for trauma assessment.
  3. Differentiate between Primary and Secondary assessment phases.
  4. Understand the characteristics of each level of the trauma assessment utilizing the A-I assessment technique.
  5. Identify potential interventions for various traumatic injuries.
  6. Identify preventative care with consideration to all six standard precautions and four transmission-based precautions.
  7. Define lab value terminology.
  8. Discuss basic chemistries and acid-base balances.
  9. Distinguish Acidemia vs Alkalemia.
  10. Explain steps to interpret labs.
  11. Distinguish abnormal and normal lab values.
  12. Understand airway anatomy and indications for mechanical ventilation.
  13. Define ventilation terminology.
  14. Identify, understand, and intervene to ventilator alarms.
  15. Understand specific indications that require RSI.
  16. Compare and contrast an RSI introduction vs. traditional intubation.
  17. Identify medications/dosages to perform an RSI.
  18. Understand the phases that make up a breath cycle.
  19. Describe how triggers and limits are set and performed.
  20. Identify basic mechanical ventilation waveforms.
  21. Create treatment plan based on ventilation waveform.
  22. Modify ventilation modes with assessment of patient presentation.
  23. Describe the anatomy of the chest.
  24. Describe the indications and contraindications for a chest tube.
  25. Describe the equipment needed to insert a chest tube.
  26. Identify the landmarks for inserting a chest tube.
  27. Describe the steps to confirming placement of a chest tube and the steps of securing a chest tube.
