2025 DAF Family Advocacy Program New Parent Support Program Training
Family Advocacy Nurses provide secondary prevention services to military families at risk for domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, and maltreatment. This activity addresses a lack of awareness in recognizing covert signs of child abuse, red flags, and sentinel events warranting further investigation. Attendees will apply new knowledge to perform their roles within the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Family Advocacy Program (FAP) Maltreatment Intervention and Prevention programs in accordance with latest Department of Defense and DAF FAP policies and guidance.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for nurses. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Summarize Department of the Air Force Instruction (DAFI) and Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) updates.
- Describe the role of the New Parent Support Program within the context of the Spectrum of Resilience.
- Identify and understand the interconnectedness between staff resilience, family readiness, and combat readiness.
- Describe the history of the New Parent Support Program and Family Advocacy Program.
- Interpret the Fiscal Year 2023 DoD report on child abuse and domestic abuse.
- Identify known triggers for abuse in infants and toddlers.
- Develop practical suggestions for stressed caregivers.
- Summarize the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) top child passenger safety and pediatric vehicular heatstroke prevention tips.
- Compare free child passenger safety trainings available on www.carseateducation.org.
- Identify the goal of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) Academy on Child Traumatic Stress.
- Recognize effective ways to use the tools, infographics, and other resources available as part of the Protective Factors Framework for Military (PFF-M) curriculum.
- Summarize the research supporting the effectiveness of delivering shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma (SBS/AHT) prevention education.
- Explain updated delivery methods, resources, and supplemental tools available to professionals providing evidence-based education to newborn families.
