Ocular Trauma Vision Readiness: Pediatric Considerations in Eye Trauma

This is the monthly Vision Center of Excellence Ocular Trauma and Vision Readiness Video TeleConference. This conference discusses ocular trauma cases and vision readiness topics from around the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses and optometrists, across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe what makes the pediatric orbit and globe behave differently under trauma
  2. Create a usable exam strategy for the frightened or uncooperative child
  3. Identify the pediatric-specific emergencies: white-eyed blowout, orbital compartment syndrome, occult open globe
  4. Apply age-appropriate thresholds for imaging, eyes under anesthesia (EUA), and operative timing
  5. Plan the visual rehabilitation that determines the actual outcome
