Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) - Licensed Providers

Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) is a safe, easy and effective way to treat many aspects of pain. It was developed in 2001 by COL (Ret.) Richard Niemtzow and was initially promoted throughout the Air Force.1-7 Since then, the BFA protocol has been accepted as a procedure to manage pain by all branches and is supported through the DHA-PI 6025.33. Currently, there is a lack of Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) skilled and credentialed providers at the MEDCoE Army-Baylor OTD program. Gaining this skillset will increase interest in further MEDCoE research centered on BFA and its applications across the medical and tactical landscapes.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physician associates/physician assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Describe the potential impact of incorporating battlefield acupuncture into clinical practice.
  2. Learn the five-point placements utilized in battlefield acupuncture.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the clinical protocol.
