Janine Austin Clayton, M.D. FARVO, Associate Director for Research on Women’s Health and Director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the architect of the NIH policy requiring scientists to consider sex as a biological variable across the research spectrum. This effort is part of NIH’s initiative to enhance reproducibility through rigor and transparency. Prior to joining the ORWH, Dr. Clayton was the Deputy Clinical Director of the National Eye Institute. A board-certified fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, Dr. Clayton’s research interests include autoimmune ocular diseases and sex influences in health and disease. She served as an elected member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2021-2025) and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2024. Dr. Clayton has been recognized as a leader by her peers with the American Medical Association’s Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service (2017), as a Luminary Honoree by the Precision Medicine World Congress (2024) and received the Public Service Visionary Award from the Society for Women’s Health Research (2024). She is the author of more than 150 scientific publications, journal articles, and book chapters.
