TBICoE Education Series: Functional Neurological Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury

This training focuses on understanding functional neurological disorder (FND) and how it relates to traumatic brain injury (TBI). It also explores new research on the importance and challenges of screening for FND after mild TBI and offering treatment, especially for patients with ongoing post-concussive symptoms. Participants gain insights into how FND affects service members with mild TBI through a provider-led case study.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, certified counselors, audiologists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define functional neurological disorder (FND) as a clinical diagnosis with significant impact on their patients’ lives.
  2. Explain proposed pathophysiology linking traumatic brain injury with FND.
  3. Recognize the intersection of post-concussion syndrome and FND.
  4. Describe at least two treatment modalities for FND.
  5. Identify three areas of potential future research opportunities.
