Bedroom Sharing, Retention, and Mental Health Among Soldiers Living in U.S. Army Barracks

The Military Psychological Health Research Dissemination Series (MPHRDS) is a platform design to present impactful studies and share cutting-edge research and innovative practices in military psychology and mental health with Department of War (DoW) leaders, clinicians, and researchers.

February Session: This activity will explore the impact of barracks living on the mental health of military service members. Understanding their life experiences is crucial for improving soldiers’ quality of life, which can influence enlistment, retention, and performance in the military.

Join the Psychological Health Center of Excellence (PHCoE) for a live-virtual event on February 26, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET. This activity is intended for military healthcare professionals across the Defense Health Agency and Military Health System.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, healthcare executives, social workers, and psychologists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Identify the term for barracks housing in the military.
  2. Understand the social and mental health differences between Soldiers in shared versus private bedrooms in the U.S. Army.
  3. Outline the limitations of the study’s methodology.
  4. Discuss how these findings could impact design of future unaccompanied housing and barracks designs.
