Nellis AFB: Accelerated Orthodontics

This course is designed to educate general dentists on the surgical, minimally invasive, and non-surgical methods of acceleration for orthodontic tooth movement. The quality of existing evidence, effectiveness, limitations, risks, and predictability of each technique will be reviewed. Indications, contraindications, and patient-specific factors like systemic conditions and medications that influence bone metabolism will be discussed to guide appropriate case selection.

Upon completion, clinicians will be better equipped to determine the appropriateness of accelerated orthodontics for their patients and to integrate evidence-based acceleration strategies into clinical practice and interdisciplinary care.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Define accelerated orthodontics and the biologic mechanism involved.
  2. Identify indications and contraindications for acceleration.
  3. Compare evidence-based acceleration techniques.
  4. Recognize risks and limitations of various techniques.
  5. Apply knowledge for patient selection, education, and appropriate referrals.
