TBICoE: Assessment and Management of Dizziness and Visual Disturbances Following Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Guidance for the Primary Care Manager
Dizziness and visual disturbances commonly occur after concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. Often, post-concussive dizziness and visual disturbances will present with overlapping symptoms and should prompt providers to perform a focused assessment for both concerns when treating patients with TBI. This training will review commonly encountered mTBI associated dizziness and visual disturbances, preferred treatment options, and specialty referral considerations. Use of a diagnostic algorithm will guide providers through the initial assessment and targeted screening questions to identify if a more focused dizziness or visual assessment is necessary. The training will conclude with instruction on application of unique tests and maneuvers to aid in diagnosis and treatment of identified dizziness or visual disturbances. This presentation will include a combination of didactic lecture and discussion. Providers in attendance will use knowledge gained to identify and treat dizziness and/or visual disturbances during the post-acute mTBI phase, supporting a more standardized approach to care following a concussion or mTBI.
