TBICoE Quarterly Education Series: Insights into the Pathophysiology of Traumatic Brain Injury

This educational activity provides healthcare providers with an advanced understanding of the pathophysiological changes associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This specialized two-hour training hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) and featuring leading experts explores how TBI and repetitive head impact exposures affect brain structure and function with a focus on emerging evidence from neuroimaging, fluid, and functional biomarkers. The evolving role of advanced imaging modalities, and diagnostic devices in supporting early detection, characterization, and monitoring of TBI will also be discussed. This activity is designed to enhance provider knowledge and understanding of TBI pathophysiology and highlight how emerging tools can support ongoing research and clinical care.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, psychologists, social workers, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, audiologists, and speech language pathologists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify emerging fluid, neuroimaging, and functional biomarkers, as well as novel medical devices, used in diagnosis and management of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  2. Summarize current and emerging methods for detecting white matter changes after TBI, with emphasis on examining microstructure across injury severities.
  3. Explain how traumatic brain injury and repetitive head impact exposures affect brain structure and function.
  4. Outline how neuroimaging and blood-based biomarkers aid in diagnosing and predicting outcomes of TBI.
