Research & Development for Emerging Health Hazards in the Arctic
Program Description:
This educational session, Research & Development (R&D) for Emerging Health Hazards in the Arctic, intends to present introductory-level information to medical staff and nurses who practice in the military context in Arctic and Sub-Arctic environments. Topics addressed include environmental health and its application to military medicine, impacts of melting permafrost on the Arctic and Subarctic, and identification and mitigation of emerging health hazards in the Arctic. The session will be hosted at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Warrior Zone and will be available virtually through MS Teams as well.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, and optometrists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Understand environmental health science and how can it be applied to military medicine
- Define environmental health risk (short-term / long-term)
- Describe how changing permafrost can currently impact operations in the Arctic battlespace
- Understand the emerging hazards in the changing Arctic environment and how to identify them
