Program Description:
Behavioral Health (BH) Guidelines for mEdic Assessment and Response (GEAR) is a train-the-trainer program on implementing the BH GEAR training package. Given to soldiers deploying to far-forward environments, the training package focuses on preventing, identifying, and managing behavioral health concerns when a behavioral health provider is not available.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, physician associates, social workers, psychologists, and certified counselors. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Articulate the core learning objectives of the BH GEAR training.
- Outline the history of the BH GEAR training, including the origin of the training content and how the training content was developed and evaluated.
- Explain how a non-provider can perform a behavioral health assessment in far forward environments.
- Summarize interventions to manage behavioral health problems that can be used by non-providers in far forward environments.
- Select appropriate interventions for use by non-providers in far forward environments that can be used to manage suicide risk.
- Differentiate between minimum, better, and best interventions that are recommended for use to manage behavioral health issues by non-providers in far forward environments.
- Discriminate between the psychopharmacological treatments for behavioral health problems available for use by non-providers in far forward environments.
- Describe how to utilize the medical evacuation flowchart to determine if a behavioral health evacuation is needed.
- Justify the need for the BH GEAR training implementation among non-providers deploying to far forward environments.
- Explain the use of the trainer’s guide in the preparation for and delivery of the BH GEAR training.
- Devise methods to utilize facilitation strategies to optimize delivery of the BH GEAR training.
- Demonstrate an ability to deliver BH GEAR training content to an audience.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, DHA, J7, CEPO is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 15.00 Clinical continuing education credits.

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 15.00 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.

DHA, J-7, Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO) has been approved by National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6955. Programs that do not qualify for National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) credit are clearly identified. DHA, J-7, CEPO is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
Requirements: CE/CME certificates are awarded to participants who fully complete the activity, successfully submit the evaluation survey, and pass the posttest. The deadline to claim credit is May 30, 2025.
