Program Description: 

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can result in complex symptom presentation in multiple body systems, including the endocrine system. The challenge of hormone dysregulation following TBI and its impact on mood changes, energy level, and body weight alterations is one that remains present in modern day warfare. This educational activity hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence will inform health care providers about hypopituitarism and obesity post-TBI and the effects on overall warfighter health. Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, athletic trainers, certified counselors, registered dieticians and dietetic technicians, registered. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss possible mechanisms leading to hypopituitarism following traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  2. Compare the role of pituitary hormones in the body
  3. Describe the impacts of pituitary deficiencies on health and quality of life
  4. Outline growth hormone replacement in patients with growth hormone deficiency
  5. Summarize how traumatic brain injury can affect the endocrine system
  6. Analyze how obesity can be a factor in TBI recovery
