Navy Cmdr. Janelle Marra, a native of Massachusetts, began her Naval Service by the Health Professions Scholarship program in 2004. Prior to her commissioning, she attended Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, for her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Psychology. After her commissioning, she attended osteopathic medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Biddeford, Maine, and graduated June 2008.

CDR Marra completed her Family Medicine Residency at the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, in Camp Pendleton, California in 2011. Her first staff tour was at Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital, in Twenty-Nine Palms, California, where she was chosen as Junior Sailor of the Quarter. Her fellowship training was completed at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in 2014. She served a department head tour of SMART Clinics at the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa from 2014-2016. She was selected as the Associate Program Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship from 2017-2020. She served as the Senior Medical Officer of the SMART center at MCRD SD and 13 area MCMH She served as the regimental surgeon of CLR-17 with 1st MLG from 2020-2023 and was selected to be the Interim 1st MLG Surgeon from September 2022 until March 2023. She served as the I MEF MEC chair and Chair of the Neuro-Musculoskeletal Subcommittee to the BUMED Female Force Readiness Advisory Board (FFRAB). She is currently serving as the Senior Medical Officer over the medical clinics on MCRD-SD, the Deputy Medical Director of Transgender Care for the Navy and Director of Medical Services for Expeditionary Medical Facility Bravo.

Her military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 Gold Stars and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, as well as being recognized as the MHS Female Physician of the Year in 2018. She is Fleet Marine Force (FMF-O) qualified.
