Harlan Dorey, M.D.
Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Navy Capt. Dorey moved frequently with his military family before finally settling in Tacoma, Washington. A Pacific Northwest enthusiast, CAPT Dorey attended the University of Washington with an NROTC Scholarship and graduated with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry. With a Navy Health Professions Scholarship to attend George Washington University School of Medicine, CAPT Dorey graduated in May 1999 and completed his East Coast transition at Portsmouth Naval Hospital as a Pediatrics intern in July 2000. As a General Medical Officer with 2nd Marine Division, CAPT Dorey completed tours with two different infantry battalions at Camp Lejeune, NC, before returning to Portsmouth Pediatrics residency, graduating in 2005. From April 2005 to August 2008 CAPT Dorey transitioned from Pediatrician to Pediatrics Department Head in Jacksonville, Florida, also Chairing the Access to Care Committee. Next he returned to the Pacific Northwest for a 3-year tour at Oak Harbor as Pediatrics Department Head and then Vice-Chair, Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECOMS). During that tour, CAPT Dorey volunteered for Pacific Partnership (PP) from May to September 2010, treating children in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea. In August 2011 CAPT Dorey transferred to Yokosuka, Japan and served as Chair of ECOMS. He developed a neonatal transport system, the “Doctor Car”, and served as liaison between two Japanese hospitals and Yokosuka. August 2014 found CAPT Dorey back in the Northwest at Naval Hospital Bremerton, continuing to serve as a pediatrician and then again as Chair of ECOMS. Committed to humanitarian assistance, CAPT Dorey also volunteered for PP 2015, visiting Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. On 11 April 2016 CAPT Dorey assumed the Chair of ECOMS, now called the Medical Executive Committee (MEC). As a natural extension of his MEC experience, CAPT Dorey became the first Chief Medical Officer of Naval Health Clinic Patuxent River, MD on 2 October 2017. Hand-picked to be the Clinical Quality Lead for BUMED’s Clinic Managers’ Course in Dec 2015, CAPT Dorey has continually taught clinic management since 2012. In Sept 2016, VADM Faison appointed CAPT Dorey as a co-lead for his SG Assessment Cell-VIII-“Leveraging the Electronic Health Record.” Finally, in May 2019, the Defense Health Agency appointed him the Chair of its Primary Care Clinical Community, promoting the best clinical pathways and peer review. CAPT Dorey is Board-Certified in Pediatrics and qualified as a Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer. Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 Awards) and the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards).
