TBICoE Quarterly Education Series: Operational Advances in Warfighter Brain Health

This live-virtual activity explores emerging topics relevant to warfighter brain health related to recovery, operational readiness, and exposure risks experienced in military environments. Learners will receive evidence-based information on: (1) the impact of omega-3 fatty acids and nutritional interventions on neuroprotection and concussion recovery; (2) the effects of occupational exposure due to high gravitational forces encountered in flight and naval operations; and (3) advances in the understanding and clinical management of blast overpressure (BOP), including updated symptom management protocols and Department of Defense policy guidance. The agenda includes presentations by subject matter experts and Q&A sessions focused on supporting learning, encouraging collaboration across professions, and sharing best practices for improving brain health for service members in both garrison and deployed settings.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Psychologists, Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants, Social Workers, and other Healthcare Professionals. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Appraise emerging evidence on the role of omega-3 fatty acids and oxylipins in brain and psychological health outcomes.
  2. Summarize strategies to improve omega-3 index levels among service members.
  3. Analyze the impact of exposure to high gravitational forces and high-speed boat injuries on the health and performance of service members.
  4. Identify mitigation strategies reducing health risks from occupational exposures.
  5. Outline the Department of Defense efforts to better understand the health effects of blast overpressure (BOP) exposure.
  6. Explain how the BOP provider support tool improves continuity of care through standardized documentation of exposure history, management of symptoms, and accurate coding.
