LTES: The Utility of Focusing on Functioning Part 2

Within the healthcare field, "functioning" is generally understood as a person's ability to perform activities and interact with his or her environment. Depending on the setting and population treated, as well as the training/field of the provider, how "functioning" is operationalized varies widely. Literature suggests that there are interventions to target functioning that may serve as "multi-tools" for a population of service members with limb trauma. In this session, we will discuss the functioning interventions that are effective across mental health concerns and apply them to case studies that focus on individuals with physical trauma.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, kinesiotherapists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the different ways in which "functioning" is understood depending on the population being treated and the health concerns involved.
  2. Identify interventions that the literature has indicated are effective for improving functioning in multiple patient populations.
  3. Apply this knowledge to case vignettes and discuss how improving functioning may serve multiple treatment goals.
