DHA: Foundational Concepts for Entry-Level Clinical Quality Management (CQM) Professionals, 2024

Program Description

Clinical Quality Management (CQM) Professionals are those staff members whose role focus on patient safety, healthcare risk management, accreditation and compliance, credentialing and privileging, clinical quality improvement, and clinical measurement. The Defense Health Agency (DHA) designed this curriculum for new entry-level CQM professionals. Learners will discover how their CQM roles support both the Military Health System (MHS) Quadruple Aim and the goal of preventing patient harm.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dentists, dental hygienists and dental lab technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe how the Defense Health Agency’s (DHA’s) mission supports our strategic goals and standards.
  2. Identify the Clinical Quality Management (CQM) policies and procedures that impact your role.
  3. Define guidelines regarding confidentiality of records, prohibition on disclosure and testimony, and transparency.
  4. Describe ways to engage patients to be proactive in their care as a highly reliable strategy for informed decision making.
  5. Explain your role as a CQM professional in basic infection prevention and control (IPC) practices.
  6. Describe the purpose of Credentialing and Privileging (CP) and its process.
  7. Describe the framework and principles of Healthcare Risk Management (HRM) including the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), guiding principles, and just culture.
  8. Discuss key standards related to the CQM programs.
  9. Summarize ways that clinicians and healthcare organizations are transparent with the public.
  10. Identify national quality databases, registries, and networks that MHS participates in.
  11. Describe how Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI) is an integral part of the CQM framework.
  12. Explain the basic principles, methods, and tools of continuous process improvement (CPI)
  13. Define change management and its value to a change initiative.
