Program Description

Amputation of an extremity comes with debilitating physical, psychological, and social changes in the lives of patients living with limb loss and patients vary widely in their ability to benefit from rehabilitation post-amputation. A variety of biopsychosocial factors impact rehabilitation success, many of which are modifiable. Patients whose distress, pain, or behavior interfere with rehabilitation progress, functioning, medical adherence, social engagement, and/or quality of life should be referred to a health/rehab psychologist for further assessment and more individualized, patient-centered psychological interventions.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, kinesiotherapists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Justify when to refer patients to a rehab/health psychologist and/or medical psychiatrist for comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and individualized BH treatment plan.
  2. Review common evidence-based health psychology interventions to address psychological factors complicating progress toward rehab goals.
  3. Describe two self-management interventions patients may be trained in to leverage throughout the rehabilitation journey.
  4. Compare utilization strategies for available outcome measures used in psychological evaluation.
