2024 Orthopaedic Physician Assistant Introductory Course

Program Description

The course is designed to provide a beyond entry level introduction to orthopaedic medicine, covering 4 of the 65D Individual Critical Task Lists which include treating traumatic pelvic injury, extremity fractures, crush injury, and traumatic wound. The course will establish and review didactic and clinical knowledge required by Physician Assistants in the evaluation and treatment of patients presenting with chronic, acute, urgent, or emergent orthopaedic conditions.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, optometrists, registered dieticians, dietetic technicians, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, kinesiotherapists, case managers, and healthcare executives. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Examine the Physician Assistant skillset beyond general practice in orthopaedic medicine regarding the evaluation and treatment of emergency, acute, and chronic orthopaedic conditions.
  2. Analyze core content of pathology related to orthopaedic medicine to include evaluation and management of the orthopaedic trauma patient.
  3. Discuss techniques including musculoskeletal exams, fracture and dislocation reduction techniques, casting and splinting management, x-ray and advanced imaging evaluation, joint aspiration and injection with and without image guidance.
