Behavioral Health Considerations in Limb Loss Rehabilitation: A Biopsychosocial Perspective
Program Description
Amputation of an extremity comes with debilitating physical, psychological, and social changes in the lives of patients living with limb loss and patients vary widely in their ability to benefit from rehabilitation post-amputation. A variety of biopsychosocial factors impact rehabilitation success, many of which are modifiable. Evaluating risk-factors for poor rehabilitation outcomes and identifying patients at high-risk, as well as developing individualized patient-centered treatment plans can help with mitigating risks and optimizing outcomes.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, kinesiotherapists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Provide an overview of the biopsychosocial model as a framework for understanding and identifying factors that influence rehabilitation success following limb amputation.

- Examine available research on the effectiveness of patient education, self-management interventions, and peer support/mentorship programs to improve post-amputation outcomes.
